Here's how it works:
After your CDs are delivered to you from CRT we'll send you a coupon for free membership. You need one for each CD you plan on selling through CD Baby. Once you have the coupon you go to www.cdbaby.net and complete the submission form. Then all you have to do is send 5 CDs and the coupon to CD Baby. They create the website, prepare the CD for digital download and begin the selling process.
If you need a UPC code for distribution through other channels and for reporting to SoundScan there is a modest fee of $20.00.
Money Made Simple:
Each time a CD is sold you'll receive an email letting you know. CD Baby takes credit card orders over the phone and on their website. They handle the shipping. When you setup your account with CD Baby you'll determine at what dollar amount you want a check sent and how often. Once you've reached your preset dollar and timeframe, CD Baby sends you a check for the sale price less $4.00 per CD sold.
Digital download payments are made the week after CD Baby is paid by the digital download provider. While each provider is different, the average is 60-65 cents per song downloaded, $6.50 per full-album download, and 1 cent per listen (when people listen to your song as if on a radio station, but don't download or buy it). CD Baby keeps 9% of the total income and you receive a check for the remaining 91%.
Your CD will remain on sale for as long as you have CDs available at CD Baby. They never pull a CD for lack of sales and you don't have an exclusive contract for selling CDs. If you want to use the digital download service you will have to commit to exclusivity since the download providers need one source to pay for each song.
